Should People on Welfare be Required to work Essay
More than _____ people across the United States received some form of government funded welfare assistance during ___yr (cit). Government programs include, but are not limited to health services, economic assistance, food assistance, and shelter assistance. The focus and design of welfare assistance programs is with the intent of aiding individuals with their essential needs. Its purpose is not to benefit deceitful individuals seeking handouts. Posed with the question, ââ¬Å"Should people on welfare be required to work?â⬠the response from a small group of my closest friends was a unanimous ââ¬Å"yes.â⬠Although, this outcome was not shocking, the degree of anger and animosity that the inquiry provokes was very intriguing, as well as the reasonsâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Alternately, there are many reasons why someone might actually not be capable of working. For example, a person caring for their terminally ill spouse or a wheel chair bound individual would be unable to leave their homes on a daily basis. Not only might someone come across the issue of his or her inability to work, but also his or her inability to find work. According to the United States department of labor, there were 9.4 million families with at least one unemployed member in 2009. As of June 2010, the employment-population ration was at 58.5 percent. Many families are simply struggling to survive due to the current recession facing our country. To enforce the requirement of those needing assistance to work there must be an availability of jobs for them to fill. Unfortunately, jobs are currently scarce. During the conversation, a prominent question raised was ââ¬Å"Why should someone else be given money that they and/or their spouses worked hard for?â⬠As previously stated current welfare programs are not designed to lavish individuals with excess, but to assist with the basic needs of their family. If a crisis arose within their own households, for example a loss of employment, assistance would be available to them as well. Many of these families including children would go hungry without the vital assistance that they receive. Secular Morality and Religious Morality Inadvertently...
Even in matters of outwardly secular morality, religion plays such a hegemonic role that, in many instances, secular morality is inadvertently influenced by religious morality. It could even be said that religious morality is greatly influenced by secular morals and not the other way around. While it would be difficult to assess the genealogy of morality it would be safe to say that morality has a very strong connection with religious morality. Moreover, to evade the almost omnipresent influence of religious morality would be nearly impossible; this allows for the almost constant melding of the two making them almost indistinguishable. While certainly not all morality is based on religion, it has become such a force that morality canâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Members of Congress are voted for based on, at least partially, their ethical beliefs and this applies for elected officials all the way up to the president; now, if almost 80% of the population ascribes to the same mora lity it would be fair to say that the vast majority of laws reflect this same religious morality. This is not to say that secular laws are the same as secular morality but this is used to illustrate the point that it cannot avoid the all-pervading morality of religion. For the most part, religious morality and secular morality do not clash because they strive for similar goals: no murder, no lying, equality, etc. so it is easy to see how morality that is based on reason and morality based on religious teachings are actually quite similar in terms of end goals. They are only dissimilar in how the conclusion is reached. Secular morality cannot but help have elements of religious morality built into its very structure due to a multitude of factors. The two are very closely connected not only because of how the United States was formed but because of the largely religious population and how hegemonic Christianity is in terms of influence. This argument also depends on an almost unanswerable question of if morality is dependent on religion or if it only depends on human logic to dictate it. While it would seem that morality is independent of a religious foundation it does borrow liberally from its traditions but it isShow MoreRelatedMarketing Management130471 Words à |à 522 Pagesa consequence of the societal view of marketing. Research Paper on Organizational Structure Free Essays
I would like to start by saying that any corporate organizational structure depends on the product line and the industry in which the company operates. The companies belong to the continuum of either the functional or project organizations. Functional companies are organized around different technological processes. We will write a custom essay sample on Research Paper on Organizational Structure or any similar topic only for you Order Now The top management of such organizations is responsible for the resource allocation, with the responsibility for the final output is not being tied to one single person. The use of rules and procedures, instructions, details and organizational traditions among the companyââ¬â¢s management and workers is vital for the companyââ¬â¢s functioning. The products belong to the high level of specialized knowledge which is created in this organizational structure (Matteson, 53). Light weight matrix organizations are functional and specialized. The product manager is usually added to this structure to coordinate the product creation and to serve as a liaison for the management-workers-customers. This new key person is used for collecting information, conflict resolution, and project objectives achievement. Product managers have less status and influence than functional managers, namely because they do not directly contact workers (Hersey, 88). Heavy weight matrix organizations possess dominant project structure and minor functional departments. The companyââ¬â¢s product manager than possesses greater reasonability while the manufacturing, and marketing concepts are present in this organization (Berger, 144). Project organizations are located on the other end of the spectrum and have the following features: teams and projects. The project workers share the same location and concentrate on the same projects. The professional workers, on the other hand are supposed to have broader tasks and associated skills and responsibilities. In the project organizations the functional managers are responsible for the human resource development and technological implementation in the functional groups. The companies can also be classified according to the nature of their business and project undertaken. The projects can be characterized by the number of employees involved to perform numerous tasks, the workload on each employee. One can also classify the organizations in the following 4 categories: I. The companyââ¬â¢s product is not complex and comprehensible for a single person, thus one person is likely to have enough knowledge to produce it. The companies that develop these kinds of products (shoes, clothes industry) usually have small development department. If this company has more than one individual department, then it usually structured as a functional organization as noted earlier in the essay ââ¬â research paper (Matteson, 57). II. The companyââ¬â¢s product is of low complexity, yet the total work is high. Such products, therefore, can be developed most efficiently within one functional department. A research department is usually the very department where this type of product is created. AS the company starts to have more departments, it would usually use the light weight matrix organizational structure to enjoy efficiency. The employees involved in this product creation are expected to work full time, and many tasks are expected to be performed simultaneously which contribute to the overall sequence design to be called Design Structure matrix (Hersey, 92). III. The companyââ¬â¢s product is of high complexity of intangible, tangible, or mechanical nature. This kind of product is still in the engineering phase, making it rather clear what needs to be done to get the product into mass production and distribution. One should use numerous skills and disciplines to create this product, and these tasks do not have high workload. It is almost impossible to cause the employees to work fulltime on the very one product, thus creating the ââ¬Ëjob shopââ¬â¢ logistics situation (Schermerhorn 120). One should not forget that manufacturing and product development is not accepted by all product managers, it still usually yield decent result. The Product development process is constantly learnt and improved to remove bottlenecks and reduce the product variation. One should focus on the process rather than on the list of tasks and duties. This type of organizational structure has to follow the following three laws (Berger, 147): a. Taking smaller steps at one time usually boosts quality and effectiveness. b. Elimination of bottlenecks drastically improves productivity and efficiency. c. Elimination of variation will remove delays and distractions and thus will free some of the corporate resources. It is of importance to note that cross functional simultaneously run engineering squads is the common practice for the product development in such organizations. It would be a mistake to assign the same person to 5-6 different projects because it would result in congestion. One should not forget that by working at 100% of the product development capacity will increase the product development lead. Thus, one should deploy about 80% of the product development capacity and focus on the bottlenecks. IV. The companyââ¬â¢s product is very complex while the total work is high. These kinds of organizations require their workers to work full time and the project organizational structure would be ideal for this very situation (Matteson, 59). Speaking about the companyââ¬â¢s strategies that are vital for the corporate survival in the long run, one should remember that they would also depend on the corporate structure and thus would be broken down into three main categories of strategies that promote corporate values, corporate culture, corporate goals, and corporate missions (Hersey, 94): Corporate level strategy encompasses all strategies and sets the companyââ¬â¢s mission and general guidelines. Functional strategies comprise Marketing strategies, financing strategies, and the strategies of each department participating in the given product development depending on the organizational structure. The focus in on mid and short term. One should remember that many companies would find it useful to use strategic business units rather than functional structure of organization to derive competitive advantage and thus govern the semi-autonomous units of organization that have their own budgeting, product development, hiring etc. Operational strategy is located on the lowest level of each organization simply because it is very narrow in focus and has daily scheduling criteria. This strategy obeys the higher level strategies present within the organization and adhere to the Management by Objectives principles (Berger, 150). Management by objectives (MBO), one should note, is the systematic scientific approach that allows the existing companies to focus on the attainable goals to reduce the costs and with the improved efficiency survive the competition. The MBO focuses on results, rather than on the process. The MBO would delegate tasks by dictating the proper final result without the detailed roadmap of how to achieve that. MBO strives to assure that everyone in the company has clear goals and objectives that coincide with the companyââ¬â¢s goals and then by empowering others will have the goals achieved. One should still remember that MBO can fit only the knowledge-based companies. How to cite Research Paper on Organizational Structure, Essays

An Incident You Will Never Forget Essay Example For Students
An Incident You Will Never Forget Essay Certain incidents so impress us that they leave an indelible mark on our memory. I was once involved in an incident of which I shall always have vivid recollections. The incident occurred when I visited a village in India together with my parents, sometime during my holidays last year. Early in the morning on the day the incident occurred, I was talking with a few of my new friends in that village. All of a sudden, a boy of my age came rushing towards us to break the news that violence had broken out in the neighborhood. Alarmed at this news, we began to protect ourselves, and before long the violence spread like wild fire throughout our area. I was a little confused at first for I had no idea about the cause of the outbreak of violence there. One of my friends told me that the area had been notorious for such occurrence owing to rivalry between two parties. Each party tried to destroy the influence of the other in that area, and the bad blood that existed between them had caused several deaths and great misery to innocent people for a long time. Official influence could not be exercised effectively in this area owing to its remoteness from the centers of authority. The members of the rival parties therefore enjoyed almost complete freedom of action. The police arrived only when there was news of violence, and often long after the damage has been done. While I was listening to this account of facts and events, the situation suddenly took an ugly turn. A man who had been standing a short distance away from us ran into his house most unexpectedly, and within minutes his house was ablaze. My friends and I then ran towards his house to put out the fire; but we were stopped by a few burly men who were holding lethal weapons in their hands. They threatened to kill if we offered any help to anyone. One of them had even struck me on my head with a stick. We realized instantly that we were no match for them and that discretion was the better part of valor. We therefore decided to proceed no further. Soon the fire from that house began to spread and several houses were burning. There were frantic cries for help. Men, women, and children were running in all directions in their desperate attempts to save whatever they could from the fire, in spite of the interference of the gangsters. A few of the unfortunate ones were burned to death, including the man who had set fire to his own house. We then concluded that the man must have been so disgusted with what we had seen for so long that he had no more desire to live, and this was his way of putting an end to himself. It was indeed a pathetic sight. Then, after several hours, the police arrived when more than a quarter of the village had already been burned to ashes. They asked us several questions to find out if we had ourselves participated in the violence. As I was foreigner who would be leaving that village the following day, I had the courage to answer all their questions and to point out the men who had threatened to kill us. Those men were then arrested together with other suspects. Early next morning, my parents and I left the village with no more desire to re-visit this place; but my memory of this incident will remain fresh forever.

Doll`s House And Women Rights Essays - Films, Ibsen Family
Doll`s House And Women Rights "A Doll House" is no more about women's rights than Shakespeare's Richard II is about the divine right of kings, or Ghosts about syphilis. . .. Its theme is the need of every individual to find out the kind of person he or she is and to strive to become that person." (Bloom 28) Ibsen portays this behavior in A Doll House through one of the main characters, Nora Helmer, by setting the scene in Norway in 1872. In the late 1800s, women did not play an important role in society at all. Their job was mainly to cook, clean, sew, take care of the children, and keep the house in order. They were treated as a material possession rather than a human being that could think and act for themselves and looked upon as a decorative member of the household. Women were robbed of their true identity and at the end of the play, Nora leaves everything behind to go out into the world to seek her identity. This behavior can be traced back to the beginning of time when women were to stay home and gather nuts and berries, while the men would go out and do the hunting and fishing. The male always dominated over the women and it was not viewed as "unfair." Male children would go to school to get an education in history, mathematics, science, english/writing, while the female would go to school to learn how to cook, sew, clean, and do household chores. The male could then further advance his education by attending a college or university, whereas no college would accept a women student. "The history of mankind is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations on the part of men toward woman, having in direct object the establishment of an absolute tyranny over her." (Declaration of Sentiments) It was believed that women were the inferior gender and had to have special attention given to them. This idea dates back to the Medieval Period in history and is where the whole idea of chivalry came about and men having to provide special care. One can see that the idea of male superiority can be referenced back to very early on in civilization to the day A Doll House was written. "Torvald: You stay right here and five me a reckoning. You understand what you've done? Answer! You understand?" (Ibsen 187) Torvald says this to Nora when he finds out that she took out a loan without his consent and forging a signature. It is prevalent that Torvald is in a state of anger and he is dominating the situation, letting Nora know who is in charge and not even wanting an explanation to "why?" she took out a loan. Women were very limited in their rights in 1872. Such rights included: women had to submit to laws when they had no voice in their formation, married women had no property rights, husbands had legal power over and responsibility for their wives to the extent that they could imprison or beat them with impunity, divorce and child custody laws favored men, giving no rights to women and when women did work they were paid only a fraction of what men earned, women were not allowed to enter professions such as medicine or law, and women were robbed of their self-confidence and self-respect, and were made totally dependent on men. (Declaration of Sentiments) Ibsen makes references to this using Christine Linde, widow and a friend to Nora. Christine's husband died and left her penniless and being that her father passed away, she is able to apply for a position at he the bank. This is the only exception society made in women holding a job outside the household. It is apparent that women have come a long way since 1872, gaining the right to vote in 1920 under the 19th amendment in the constitution, gaining a right to an equal education, owning property, and having a job. These were all results of the women's rights movement amongst others. Throughout the play, Nora plays the role of a typical women in the 1800s, staying by her husband's side, taking care of the children, and doing all the household chores. She does, however, go behind Torvald's back when she takes out the loan. When she realizes that she is unfit to do anything in life and announces her remedy-"I have to try to educate myself" (Ibsen 192) she walks out the door and expresses a deal of

Three question - Essay Example Thus, I participated in this sales internship program in order to improve and perfect my communication and strategic thinking skills. As a sales intern, i had the responsibility of elaborating the various products to customers. Additionally, I had to convince them to purchase the insurance products. This challenge motivated me to adapt and try to transform my personality. A good salesman listens to what his or her customers say. Therefore, I tried to develop good listening skills. A lot of people do not comprehend what the other individual is saying. This can be as a result of minute concentration. I learned to concentrate fully when my clients were speaking. As such, I got to know about their needs better. A better understanding of their needs gave me an upper hand in convincing them to purchase my products. Itââ¬â¢s not just listening to the clientââ¬â¢s voice that enabled me to excel in my sales, but also watching their body language. I learnt to recognize when a client seemed disinterested or when I lost him/her. For example, a client is disinterested if he or she constantly interrupts my conversation. In addition, constantly looking at his/her phone is a clear indication that the client is not i interested in the company products. To convince them and gain their trust, I learnt how to speak slowly, concisely, and have all the information at my fingertips. Having polite catchy exit phrases is another way to endear yourself to a client. For example, ââ¬Å"maybe I ought to come back at a later time sir/; madamâ⬠is a sure way of dismissing a client politely. This polite way will enable them to come back to you at another time. Therefore, good communication skills are a vital and critical aspect in a sales environment. Prior to undertaking this exercise, my introvert personality had a massive impact on my expressions. Anxiety disorders and how the affect peoples lives Research Paper
Anxiety disorders and how the affect peoples lives - Research Paper Example order, (1) generalised anxiety disorder (GAD), (2) obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), (3) posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and (4) social anxiety disorder (SAD). The discussion will concentrate on the symptoms, causes, and effects of these anxiety disorders on peopleââ¬â¢s lives. Anxiety is the concept used to explain a common feeling individuals experience when stressed or confronted with danger or threat. When individuals experience anxiety, they normally feel troubled, discomfited, and nervous. Anxiousness can be a consequence of life experiences, such as major accident, severe illness, job loss, death of a loved one, or relationship breakdown (Oei & Browne, 2006). Feeling anxious in these circumstances is fitting and normally people experience anxiety for only a specific period of time (Stein & Gorman, 2001). Due to the fact that feelings of anxiety are very widespread, it is crucial to become aware of the difference between anxiousness fitting to a condition and the symptoms of an anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders are a group of illnesses typified by relentless feelings of intolerable anxiety, and severe tension and uneasiness. Individuals are prone to be diagnosed with an anxiety disorder once their anxiety level becomes severe that it considerably affects their daily life and prevents them from doing what they want to accomplish (Mcnally, 2003). Anxiety disorders are the most widespread type of psychological disorder, and impinge on one in 20 individuals at any given time. They normally develop in early adulthood, but can begin in early life or later in life. Anxiety disorders usually become manifest unexpectedly, with no evident cause (Oei & Browne, 2006, 53). They are usually accompanied by extreme physical turmoil, such as tremors and breathlessness. Other signs can include shuddering, sweating, feelings of nausea, choking, dizziness, abdominal tension, feelings of imminent threat or feelings of losing control (Oei & Browne, 2006). This essay

Research Methods and Stats for Finance - Essay Example ore, the appropriate and integrative application of "Software as electronic commerce platform for manufacturers and wholesale distributors" with a focus on education and implementation of supply chain management software could have a significant impact on the manner that supply chains function within the companies (Karpinski p 9 1999). Business process re-engineering (BPR) is applied at the local, managerial, and corporate levels of the business. This concept has a significant impact on the various phases of the business process, where the changes that occur can be related to the flow of information and products (Desel & Erwin, 2000). BPR is used in SCM to renovate the managed and integrated processes that create a capable and viable business environment (Chan and Qi 2003). The crucial tenants of BPR is that it reduces tension between inter-organisational departments and business partners, particularly when the there is friction within the SC process (McCormack & Johnson, 2000). Business process re-engineering, specifically related to the main focus of technology and communication in supply chain management includes: (1)Further integration of activities between suppliers and customers across the entire supply chain;(2) on-going changes in supply chain needs and required flexibility from IT; (3) more mass customization of products and services leading to increasing assortments while decreasing cycle times and inventories; (4) the locus of the driverââ¬â¢s seat of the entire supply chain and (5) supply chains consisting of several independent enterprises (Akkermans et al p 284 2003). The benefits of using the BPR concept to promote SCM needs are that it connects information management (McCormack & Johnson, 2000); promotes cost saving activities through efficiency and communication (Horvath, 2001), and reduces financial risk in unsuccessful supply chains (Cross 2000). This project is to examine management logistics in supply chain management as it relates to the

Leading In the Affective Domain
Leading In the Affective Domain Describe the effect behaviors have on productivity. Contrast the cognitive and affective domains. Research What is the relationship between the domains and learning? Identify a cognitive skill and an affective skill? The concept for learning domains and educational taxonomies evolved from the 1948 American Psychological Association Convention (Menix, 1996). There are three domains involved in the process of learning which exist as separate yet interactive processes involved in the Human learning outcomes. The cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains epitomize the different aspects and degrees of learning complexity (Menix, 1996). The cognitive domain is often described as what we know, but is more the interaction of knowledge, understanding, application, analysis, synthesis and evaluation (Jensen, 2003). This encompasses the psychological and intellectual functions that facilitate comprehension and subsequent formation of rational judgments and includes perception, memory, imagination, thought and language (Brà ¼hlmeier, 2010). An example of a Cognitive skill is comprehension-to successfully interpret the meaning in order to develop an understanding of what is required. The affective domain concerns empathy and behaviour by the interaction of receiving, responding, valuing, organization and characterization by a value or value complex (Gronlund, 1991, p. 34). Emotions stimulate our learning and determine whether we are confident in this learning. Only when we have strong feelings about it do we believe something and give significance to it (Gazibara, 2003). An example of an affective skill is Value- to attach values to concepts and express an opinion as to its worth. Between the domains which one has the greatest impact on productivity? I feel that affective domain has a more significant impact on productivity in that the cognitive domain imparts the knowledge of how to do the task and the psychotic domain gives us the manual dexterity however the intention to do the task is carried out by the affective domain-attitude and motivation. Koul et al (2004) suggested that students perceptions of biology and physics classroom learning environments and their biology and physics classroom anxiety are conditioned by their motivational goal orientations Contrast the tasks, obstacles and goals of the Bully versus the Charismatic Leader. The authoritarian leadership style is the historical model of leader, based on the power being held exclusively by an individual leader who dictates policies and procedures, determines goals and strategies and directs without input by the subordinates, possibly modelled on historical feudal leadership where the word of the leader is absolute. It is largely dismissed as a leadership style. Smither (1991) wrote that it is not advocated in any management textbook recommends it. Many people who have under an authoritarian leader, describe their experience as a nightmare. Authoritarian methods of operation are dysfunctional, causing breakdown in the organization, in work accomplishment, and in interpersonal relations (Fisher, 1978). It is not without advocates however, in certain situations. Smither (1991) wrote about cases where a team management approach has been ineffective, and that authoritarian leadership as a management style has seen some revival. Researchers have found that there are cases where teams respond well to this management approach. The article suggests essentially that some people like to be led, and do not want responsibility of decision-making concerning organisational operations. Many individuals favour the structure and order of an authoritarian workplace. Additionally he writes that changing ones leadership style to fit the situation -has been found ineffective by a great many managers. While it is important to remember that authoritarian management is not a synonym for oppressive or punitive management, there is no cause to assume that teamwork or quality circles in themselves will result in higher productivity (Smither, 1991). Clegg et al (2003) described three forms of authority-charismatic authority as authority denoted due to the attractiveness and power of the leader, in that the leader is effectively owed homage through personal magnetism, grace and bearing. Traditional authority where the authority is owed by birthright e.g. the clas s system. Rational-legal authority holds that authority is given due to the position held by the leader in that it is not the individual but the office that commands authority. Kuhn (2012) described a charismatic leader as a person who creates the belief that anything is possible, via the command of three elements-branding, articulation and affection of the team. Tuomo (2005) wrote that a charismatic leader is effective when the leader behaviours are motivated by altruism as opposed to ego. Raelin (2003) warned that though charismatics can charm employees with their rhetoric and can draw the big picture, they can display such traits as grandiosity and suspicion. This was further tempered with the lack of availability with born leaders, and the requirement to recruit the capable. Traits required included innate intelligence, a desire to learn and work with others, giving them the ability to become effective leaders. The key issue with an authoritarian leader is one of staffing retention and low morale. The key issue with the charismatic leader is to perform and produce the promises. Describe a memorable leader: How did they impact Stress, Control and Satisfaction? Greg Dyke amongst other achievements served for a short-lived tenure as the director general of the British Broadcasting Cooperation. This was terminated following a disagreement with the government of the time concerning an edition of the current affairs programme Today questioning the justification from the government for the role of the United Kingdom in the conflict. During his tenure, Greg Dyke achieved several significant victories overseeing the transition from analogue to digital television, the rise of the MTV phenomena. He significantly reduced costs by terminating consultancy and agency staffing which was a contributory factor to the cooperations lack of success, as was the extant management style at the time which was responsible for eroding the BBCs Creativity (Schlesinger, 2010). Overturning this and effectively empowering his staff helped to regain creativity within the cooperation which effectively defines his tenure. Additionally, he had a management style that one many allies within the cooperation in that he was an approachable individual who interacted with all levels of staff. Such was his popularity that when he was forced to resign the cooperation saw industrial action as workers went on strike in protest. His success as a leader was according to him, down to making sure staff who worked closely with him, broadcasted the right message to others. References Clegg. S., Kornberger. M., Pitsis. T. Air Pressure effects the Speed of Falling objects :: essays research papers fc
à à à à à Research An object that is falling through the atmosphere is subjected to two external forces. The first force is the gravitational force, expressed as the weight of the object. The weight equation which is weight (W) = mass (M) x gravitational acceleration (A) which is 9.8 meters per square second on the surface of the earth. The gravitational acceleration decreases with the square of the distance from the center of the earth. If the object were falling in a vacuum, this would be the only force acting on the object. But in the atmosphere, the motion of a falling object is opposed by the air resistance or drag. The drag equation tells us that drag is equal to a coefficient times one half the air density (R) times the velocity (V) squared times a reference area on which the drag coefficient is based. The motion of a falling object can be described by Newton's second law of motion, Force = mass x acceleration. Do a little algebra and solve for the acceleration of the object in terms of the net external force and the mass of the object (acceleration = Force / mass). The net external force is equal to the difference between the weight and the drag forces (Force = Weight - Drag). The acceleration of the object then becomes acceleration = (Weight - Drag) / mass. The drag force depends on the square of the velocity. So as the body accelerates, its velocity (and the drag) will increase. It will reach a point where the drag is exactly equal to the weight. When drag is equal to weight, there is no net external force on the object, and the acceleration will become equal to zero. The object will then fall at a constant velocity as described by Newton's first law of motion. The constant velocity is called the terminal velocity. What is aerodynamics? The word comes from two Greek words aerios concerning the air, and dynamis, meaning powerful. Aerodynamics is the study of forces and the resulting motion of objects through the air. Humans have been interested in aerodynamics and flying for thousands of years, although flying in a heavier-than-air machine has been possible only in the last hundred years. Aerodynamics affects the motion of a large airliner, a model rocket, a beach ball thrown near the shore, or a kite flying high overhead. The curve ball thrown by big league baseball pitchers gets its curve from aerodynamics.

Alcohol Prevention
There is a rich body of literature that deals with intervention approaches for the large population that have problems with alcohol abuse. Alcohol abuse appears to be a grave situation, considering the huge number of adolescents who have a problem with alcohol and substance abuse. Thus, ââ¬Å"[i]n 2002, an estimated 10.7 million American youths, 28.8% of total youths 12ââ¬â20 years old, were current drinkersâ⬠(Society for the Study of Addiction, 2004).The gravity of the problem is underscored by the huge part of the statistics to belong to binge and heavy drinkers. The ââ¬Å"US National Survey on Drug Use and Health in 2002â⬠estimated that 7.2 million adolescents are binge drinkers, while 2.3 million adolescents are heavy drinkers. Heavy drinkers are those who consumed more than four drinks in five different days in the past 30 days. The staggering figures lead to the conclusion that there is serious public health problem among the youth with respect to their alcohol consumption. This problem extends to serious behavioral disorders resulting from alcohol consumption, such as alcoholism. The problem is even more serious because disorders that are related to alcohol abuse are likely to become ââ¬Å"chronic and to persist into adulthoodâ⬠(Society for the Study of Addiction, 2004).The problem with adolescent alcohol abuse has led to the development of various treatments, both in the private and public healthcare systems. These treatments often range from adolescent to adult care. However, treatment cares often result in relapse in 50-70 percent of affected adolescents. Therefore, there is a need for systematic approaches that are tailored to meet the specific needs and limitations of the target population, which is the youth (Society for the Study of Addiction, 2004).Treatments require appropriate diagnostic criteria in assessing alcohol use patterns of adolescents. For example, current drinkers may be determined by using the criterion that the person ââ¬Å"consumed at least one drink in the past 30 daysâ⬠(Society for the Study of Addiction, 2004).Moreover, there is a need to develop a framework within which ââ¬Å"alcohol-related pathologyâ⬠could be accounted for in the adolescent stage of a person's life (Society for the Study of Addiction, 2004).The literature on the subject also has a huge space for the role of support groups in the prevention and therapy for people who have problems with alcohol abuse.Literature ReviewThe article entitled Society for the Study of Addiction (2004) cites Liddle (2004), who reviewed therapies involving the family of the adolescent who has problems in alcohol and drug abuse. There are suggestions to developà ââ¬Å"adolescent focused, family-based therapies for substance abuseâ⬠(Society for the Study of Addiction, 2004).Family-based therapies are believed to be effective for the helpful recovery of alcohol-dependent adolescent. Family-based therapies often analyze à ¢â¬Å"videotaped in-therapy sessions.â⬠Such records help in the identification of problems and issues, and serve as bases for change and treatment (Society for the Study of Addiction, 2004).This article is useful because it points out how important it is to first determine the extent of the problem before attempting to solve it. In the case of alcoholic adolescents, there is a need to first know the needs and limitations of each person and proceed from there. Intervention strategies, such as family-based therapies, should factor in such details in order to be effective.Videotaped therapy sessions are also helpful because they allow all stakeholders, such as the alcohol-dependent person, his family, and the therapist, to have a clear perspective of the situation, through observation from a different angle. Finally, family members could be effective in helping adolescent alcohol dependents by providing moral support.Another article focuses on the ââ¬Å"pragmatic aspect of the t herapeutic process taking placeâ⬠in the weekly-held meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous. It also discusses how the fellowship had grown into a worldwide phenomenon since its inception in the 1930s (Arminen, 1998).Alcoholics Anonymous, which is described as a ââ¬Å"therapeutic fellowship for those who are prone to addictions and over consumption of alcohol and other substancesâ⬠(Arminen, 1998), encourages therapy through situated interaction. Itââ¬â¢s motto is ââ¬Å"one day at a timeâ⬠, which emphasizes that the attainment of sobriety is uncertain, but reachable (Arminen, 1998).Analysis of the style of sharing implemented in meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous led to the observation that speakers refer to speakers in previous meetings to show how the speakers are aligned. Moreover, this style has significant value as social devices that maintain the fragile relationship between members (Arminen, 1998).This article is useful in showing effective methods of dealing with alcoholism as a group, rather than as individuals. It shows how a method that deals with the problem one day at a time could achieve results. Furthermore, this article points out how Alcoholics Anonymous uses social devices to meet the goal of addressing alcoholism.Another article on the subject was written by Linsky in 1970 ââ¬â 1971. It is an exposition of the public's views on alcoholism, as manifested by themes of articles and images featured in popular magazines. Generally, alcoholism was viewed as a form of social deviance. However, in the twentieth century, society's views on alcoholics were redefined. The article notes that changes in societyââ¬â¢s views on alcoholism also influenced the treatment options available to alcoholics (Linsky, 1970-1971).

7 Ways to Deep Clean Your Resume
7 Ways to Deep Clean Your Resume In preparation for going away for the Thanksgiving holiday, I decided to ââ¬Å"deep cleanâ⬠my kitchen. As I was wiping down the back panel of my stove (the one with all the buttons), it struck me that the Whirlpool logo was light blue. I had never thought twice about the color of that logo in the four years I had lived in this apartment. But now I got curious, and discovered a light blue protective sticker covering up the silver Whirlpool logo that was meant to ornament the stove. I pulled it off, and the appliance now seems just a little bit newer: It shines the way it was intended. Moving on to the sink, I discovered a similar sticker on the metal container that holds my scrubbies. I pulled that one off too. Itââ¬â¢s like I have a whole new look to my kitchen! This experience got me thinking: Where else in our lives do we stare at something day after day, accepting it as part of our environment, without thinking to look more carefully? Where do we blindly accept messes and errors that could easily be peeled back to reveal something shiny underneath? Deep Clean Your Resume One place a lot of people have become blind to errors is on their resumes- one area where it is most important to be squeaky clean. Below are seven common spots to look for possible cleaning opportunities: Address, phone and email. Although itââ¬â¢s unlikely you have misspellings in any of these key areas, perhaps you changed a phone number or email address and forgot to change it on your resume? Make sure your address, phone and email are not just correct but also up to date! If you are in a technology field, use a gmail address or paid account and stay away from hotmail and yahoo. Section headings. Have you checked the spelling of the word Achievements (I have seen senior executivesââ¬â¢ resumes where the heading is spelled Acheivements)? How about Experience and Activities? Are there any extra letters floating around? Did you correctly spell Extracurricular (I have seen Extracaricular). Not only could errors like these turn off a hiring manager who notices them, but they could prevent an ATS system from recognizing an entire section of your resume. Job titles. One of the most commonly misspelled words on resumes is ââ¬Å"Managerâ⬠(often spelled ââ¬Å"Mangerâ⬠). Check your job titles to make sure they are spelled correctly! Verbs. ââ¬Å"Ledâ⬠is the past tense of ââ¬Å"Leadâ⬠(many people mistakenly write ââ¬Å"Leadâ⬠). Also, are you repeating your verbs over and over in various bullets? See what you can do to vary your verbs! Your resume will truly start to shine. And finally, make sure your past jobs use past tense verbs! Often when someone converts a present job to a past job, some of those verbs remain in the present tense. This applies to ALL verbs in the section, not just the ones that start each bullet. For more tips on varying your verbs, view my webinar, Top 10 Ways to Make Resume Writing FUN! Format. Do all your bullets and dates line up with each other? Do you use the same font and font size throughout your resume (unless you have an artistic, consistent reason for using two different fonts)? Is your spacing even? Are your headers all formatted the same way? If not, you have some cleaning up to do! Dates. Line up all your dates format-wise and use consistent formatting (donââ¬â¢t write 1/06 to 2/05 in one spot and 3/2008-4/2011 in another; donââ¬â¢t write December 2004 in one spot and Dec. 2006 in another). Check that all dates are accurate, with proper months and years, listed in reverse chronological order. Also see tip #4 on using past tense verbs consistently in your past jobs. Document Properties and Tracked Changes. If someone else assisted you with your resume, there might be tracked changes and document properties still lurking. To clean up tracked changes, accept all changes and delete all comments. Want more detailed instructions? Check out my article, How to Avoid Embarrassing Editing Marks on Your Documents! To delete document properties such as Author, go to the File tab, click on Check for Issues and then Inspect document. Follow the prompts and your document will be cleaned of whatever information you choose. If youââ¬â¢re applying for jobs or plan to do so in the future, you will benefit from ââ¬Å"deep cleaningâ⬠your resume. Do you have additional ideas of steps you can take? Surprise errors found? Please share below, and scrub your resume so that, like the Whirlpool logo on my stove, your accomplishments can shine the way they were intended!

Energy to a Particular Organization, Charity, or Cause
Why People Should Donate Time/Money/Energy to a Particular Organization, Charity, or Cause Introduction In our day to day lives, people are very busy in their careers or jobs and they tend to concentrate too much on them and a bit of personal lives. This is usually at the expense of giving back to the society through various means that are aimed at making the lives of the less fortunate in the society better.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Why People Should Donate Time/Money/Energy to a Particular Organization, Charity, or Cause specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Corporate social responsibility is a very critical aspect that should be emphasized among individuals, groups and organizations so that the lives of the less privileged or those suffering from a particular problem in our communities could be uplifted. There are various reasons why people should volunteer or donate their energy, time, money and other resources to charities, non-profitable organizations and other causes. This piece of work looks into these reasons with much emphasis being given to why people should invest their energy and resources on Alzheimers Association. Reasons why people should donate time, money and energy to Alzheimers Association Alzheimers Association is a cause whose main aim is to eradicate Alzheimer disease through combined efforts that aim at providing effective care and support to all those suffering from the disease as well as reducing the risk of dementia by enhancing brain health. This is achieved through advanced research. Its vision is to have a world that is free from Alzheimerââ¬â¢s disease. ââ¬Å"The Alzheimers Association is the leading, global voluntary health organization in Alzheimers care and support, and the largest private, nonprofit funder of Alzheimers researchâ⬠(Anonymous Para 2). Like any other charitable non-profit making organization, Alzheimers Association is a cause that really needs support from well wishers to keep it going, in its efforts to help individuals wh o suffer from Alzheimer disease. Disease is a problem that affects everyone in the society and people should therefore take part in helping out those suffering from Alzheimer disease as a way of appreciating the gift of good health. There are various reasons why people should contribute effortlessly towards the achievement of Alzheimers Associationââ¬â¢s goals and mission some of them being for individual satisfaction, the victimsââ¬â¢ well being while others are for the good of the society at large. One reason is the fact that there is power in giving.Advertising Looking for essay on social sciences? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Giving is usually associated with the rich and wealthy but that should not be the case since it is an act that comes from the heart and not the pockets, without any expectations of getting something in return. Time alone is enough for instance sharing with and encouraging the patien ts suffering from Alzheimer disease and people should therefore donate towards Alzheimers Association. This helps people to enjoy the process of helping as they see their efforts making positive impacts like bringing happiness to a person who is hopeless due to some problems for instance pain and suffering like in the case of Alzheimer illness. Donating to a cause helps build purpose in life and also improves ones sense of well-being through allowing for inner satisfaction. It also strengthens a personââ¬â¢s spiritual life and offer contentment and inner peace. This is achieved through knowing that one sacrificed something no matter how little, to help people in need (LaMeaux par 4). People would be motivated to donate towards Alzheimers Association due to the fact that it carries out very essential activities aimed at helping the sick and in taking part in its activities through donation, people will have the inner satisfaction brought about by seeing positive change/impact they make on less fortunate individuals. Donating to various causes also help an individual to be well versed with what happens around people who are less fortunate especially on matters of social injustice. This is so because as people think of engaging in charitable work, they tend to gather more information about the particular group for instance through research. The will for instance know all aspects that surround Alzheimers Association more especially the patients. ââ¬Å"This keep people informed of the social injustice acts carried out upon people and hence be in a better position to make positive moves by effectively challenging those responsible to take positive changes to situations in an effort to save lives and make life worth living for the affectedâ⬠(LaMeaux Para 5). Another good reason why people should support Alzheimers Association is because the act of volunteering is linked with various physical as well as social benefits. After people engage in charitable acti vities, they tend to have the urge to be more involved including devoting most of their time and skills, for instance in helping the people affected by the Alzheimer disease. This is deemed to help in enhancing ones social networks while at the same time gaining social, physical as well as spiritual benefits. Tax benefit is another reason as to why people should donate to charities and non-profit making organizations such as Alzheimerââ¬â¢s Association. Although this should not be the driving force towards ones decision to donate, it is encouraging. This aspect of tax eviction allow people to pay less for all the monetary and non-monetary contributions and hence they end up providing more and hence helping those involved in a great manner unlike when tax could be imposed (GAO 4).Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Why People Should Donate Time/Money/Energy to a Particular Organization, Charity, or Cause specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Conclusion From the above discussion, it is evident that it is worth donating ones time, money or even energy to a given cause for instance the Alzheimerââ¬â¢s association. People should take part in what is going on around them and support as much as they can. This is because these causes, organizations and charities have got positive moves and they aim at uplifting peopleââ¬â¢s lives in one way or the other, an effort that would not be possible without them. There are also many benefits that are associated with volunteering and donations as stated above and people should therefore participate fully. Saving lives or even making lives of people suffering from Alzheimers disease worth living is a good act that should be encouraged among all individuals in the society to help eliminate the ordeal. Premaritalsex Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Premaritalsex - Essay Example Although premarital sex in itself may not be evil per se, unprotected premarital sex especially among young people between the ages of 15 to 19 can lead to unwanted pregnancies and infection with sexually transmitted diseases including Acute Immune Diseases Syndrome (AIDS). Premarital sex can lead to a host of problems. According to the Guttmacher Institute (2010), around 46% of kids around the age of 15 to 19 in the United States have had sex at least once. Many of these young people had sex out of curiosity and peer pressure. In many schools around the country, kids see sex as a right of passage so those who want to belong to the ââ¬Å"inâ⬠crowd must experience sexual awakening to be accepted (Finer LB et al., 2006). Kids who remain virgins especially during their senior years in high school are often ridiculed by their peers and called old fashion and ââ¬Å"uncoolâ⬠(Finer LB et al., 2006). This kind of peer pressure can lead some students to resort to some drastic measures such as having unprotected sex. As a result, about 10% of pregnant women in the United States are teenagers (Guttmacher Institute, 2010). As it is, a lot of young people drop out of school because of unwanted pregnancies. Premarital sex that ends in unwanted pregnancy is a very big issue especially among young people. Since many of pregnant teenagers are reluctant to tell their parents about their condition, many of them do not get proper prenatal care especially during the first trimester of their pregnancy (Hofferth SL et al., 2001). This situation can cause some health problems and complication both in the mother and the baby especially during the last term of the pregnancy (Banerjee, et. al. 2009). Babies born to teenager mothers who have not received proper prenatal care are more likely to suffer from low-birth weight compared to those babies whose mothers received proper pre-natal care (Banerjee, et. al. 2009). After giving birth, teenager

International sale carriege and contract of goods Essay
International sale carriege and contract of goods - Essay Example In the United Kingdom, the nature of a sale transaction, as to whether domestic or international, is determined in accordance with the places where the contracting parties hold their principal places of business. If the parties hold their places of business in different jurisdictions, the sale is characterised as international, otherwise it is domestic. This is the approach taken by the s. 26 of the Unfair Contract Terms Act 1977 as well as Article 1 of the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG hereafter).1 Many types of risks are being borne by long distance sellers in an international sale of goods, which include, inter alia: the uncertainty resulting from the transit of goods by sea; possible political uncertainty; conflict of law, and; payment issues. 1.1 The Uncertainty Brought About by Transit of Goods by Sea It has been said that the management of international business is the management of risk, a fair assessment considering the geog raphical distance between parties and the political and legal disparities between and among various jurisdictions. International sale of goods is complicated by the likely sea transit of goods. The uncertainty of having the goods travel from one point to the other for a considerable period of time from the time the seller brings his goods to the carrier for shipment to the time these goods are actually delivered to the buyer often entails risks that parties are eventually forced to assume. Thus, it is an often told tale in the international business world of goods damaged, spoiled, rusted, contaminated or lost while aboard vessels or when the vessels sink because of bad weather as they are being taken from one point to another. 2 1.2 Conflict of Laws Additionally, when a transaction of sale of goods involves parties coming from different states or countries a conflict of laws is likely to ensue. Thus, when conditions necessitating resolutions of dispute regarding the contract crop u p, the problem of what law should govern the interpretation of the contract as well as the proper forum of the dispute resolution become a problem. After resolution, the problem of enforcing them in the other jurisdiction remains.3 1.3 Problems Pertaining to Payment If the sale, for example, is agreed to be on credit terms the main problem of the seller is how to ensure payment. Allied to this is the problem of currency fluctuation that may occur at any time during the pendency of the transaction, which can potentially change the complexion of the transaction from being profitable to disadvantageous.4 1.4 Political Instability If the other party comes from a state with an unstable political environment and changes in government policies in international transactions occur during the pendency of the transaction, this could lead to changes as well in the nature of the original contract between the parties.5 To minimise risks inherent in

Women In Macbeth Essay Example for Free
Women In Macbeth Essay Shakespeare ââ¬Å"Macbethâ⬠and Robert Browning ââ¬Å"The Laboratory, are related via the theme of power and in both stories in involves a murder plot. In both works it shows ambitious women is willing to resort to murder to accomplish their ends. Both are not afraid to kill, both use a lot of descriptive language and they are both planners. Both women in Macbeth and The Laboratory are shown to seek power thru an intended killing to gain themselves some power they covet which is currently possessed by their intended victim. Macbeth seeks the crown of Scotland by murdering the king, and the narration of The Laboratory seeks a redress of grievance via the murder of her rival .The similarity in both characters is that both are open to kill and they showed no remorse or moral problems in it. Like for example in The Laboratory the narrator describes how is she going to kill her loverââ¬â¢s mistress. ââ¬Å"Now that, trying thy glass mask tightly My gaze tho these faint smoke curling whitely As though pliest thy trade in this devilââ¬â¢s smithy Which is the poison to poison her, prither? à As this compared to Lady Macbeth of killing Duncan, which can be seen in Act 1, Scene 5 p.20. ââ¬Å"Come to my womans breast, and take my milk for gall, you murdering minister Whereas in your sightless substance You wait on natureââ¬â¢s mischief Come, thick, night And pall thee in the dunnest smoke of hell. With these scene in Macbeth and the lines in The Laboratory poem it shows that the character doesnââ¬â¢t show any remorse till the end until she loses her mind and stricken with guilt. These women shows that they quite brutal, aggressive and violent characters as what Lady Macbeth describes, she would dash her childââ¬â¢s brain on the ground rather than break a promise to her husband whereas the speaker in The Laboratory describes how she would like the rivals to suffer and die. They both use their femininity to manipulate men into doing what they want, and in both contexts, society would have been appalled by this type of woman. They both seem a little mentally unstable the speaker in The Laboratory is very paranoid and seems to jump between talking about murder and talking about dancing making her sound just a little psychotic! Lady M eventually goes mad andcant cope with the guilt, her sleepwalking scene shows just how disturbed she is.

Suicide is a permanent solution to what is often a temporary problem. Suicide not only affects the individual but it also affects all the people that surround that one person who committed suicide. When a person decides he/she wants to die they commit this act. But, when a person attempts suicide and is unsuccessful this can lead to that individual to be in more pain to include: broken bones to brain damage. An unsuccessful, suicide attempt can cause the person to sink further into depression as well. There are many contributing factors when dealing with someone who wants to commit suicide but there are also a few myths that are associated with suicide as well. When people talk about committing suicide to another person this does not necessarily mean that they want to kill themselves, but it just might be that they are reaching out or crying for help. There are many different myths associated with suicide. Myths like: people who talk about suicide are just trying to get attention; f rom suicide occurring without warning; and suicidal people not wanting to die. To identify theses myths one must understand why someone would want to end their life. With over 38,000 suicides in 2010 The Center for Disease Control and Prevention claims that is an average of 105 each day. ââ¬Å"There is one suicide for every 25 attempted suicides and suicide results in an estimated $34.6 billion in combined medical and work-loss costsâ⬠. (States News Service) People who want to commit suicide can attribute these thoughts to many factors. Factors like family history of suicide, attempted suicide and depression, alcohol and drug problems also contribute to the thoughts of suicide. Warning signs are identified in many different ways and they also change with age... ... Did he want to die? His mind was not yet matured as most teenagers minds are. He just wanted the feeling of loss to stop. That was his cry for help. Luckily, it was only for a short time. ââ¬Å"According to the Mayo Clinic, information was released relating to debunking certain myths about suicide. ââ¬Å"The majority of people contemplating suicide don't really want to die. They are seeking an end to intense mental and/or physical pain. Most have a treatable mental illness. Interventions can save lives.â⬠(ââ¬Å"States News Serviceâ⬠) Suicide is a very serious condition that affects the lives of not only the individual who commits suicide, but it affects all the people who are involved with that individual. When we can separate the facts from the myths about suicide, we could possibly prevent a suicide and save someoneââ¬â¢s life. Everyone should know the facts, it can save a life.

America: The Land of ââ¬ÅEqualââ¬Â Opportunity Essay
Although the American society that we live in today prides itself on equal job opportunity and progression, it is easy to see behind the deceiving faà §ade. Women have always been viewed as the less dominant gender due to the patriarchy that is provided by society. In fact, women are still making a measly seventy-seven cents for every dollar that a man makes, and the gap is even worse for African-American or Latina women working (Huffington). Even with women having a greater entry into the workforce in recent years, their pay is still considerably less than a manââ¬â¢s (Conley 312). Due to this suffering pay disparity, the women in the workplace are forced to suffer through many barriers that are not thought of and are unheard of by men. It is difficult to break through the glass ceiling of the corporate world for women to get to a higher job title, they are placed into the category of ââ¬Å"caregiverâ⬠for children, and finally they are faced with sexual harassment in the workplace. Due to these unfair blockages within the corporate world, the women in todayââ¬â¢s society face the harsh inequality provided by the workforce. The glass ceiling of the corporate world is thought of to be a main barrier within the inequality of gender in todayââ¬â¢s society. This invisible limit on womenââ¬â¢s climb up the corporate ladder poses as a very difficult hurdle to dodge towards success in the work place (Conley 315). If a person simply cannot go any further in their job, why would they bother to put forth more effort? In order for a company to succeed, it is necessary for its employers to go above and beyond what they are expected to do; when a person feels that they no longer must do this, however, the bare minimum will most likely be expected of these people. Women make up 46.5 percent of the workforce in America, yet they only occupy less than 8 percent of the head corporate positions (The Conundrum). This number is astounding based on the percentage of women that make up the workforce in total, and is frustrating for the women who are well-equipped for the job at hand. If this glass ceiling barrier were to be broken, the workforce would have a more equal balance of corporate heads, and would most likely have a more productive workforce because of this. With everyone is striving to make it to the top, all will be going further than what is expected of them. Based on the glass ceiling provided to women in the workforce, a barrier isà created that must be broken through to improve productivity and equality within the work place. Women in society today are seen as the ââ¬Å"housewivesâ⬠. Due to the gender roles provided by society from birth, women are taught to behave and act a certain way within the house. They are thought of as child bearers, cooks, caregivers, and the person who is responsible for other chores around the house; Arlie Hochschild calls this effect the second shift (Conley 469). Due to this effect on society, women may be seen as less expected to work full-time, when in fact, only 3 percent of women managers said that family responsibilities were a main obstacle in their career (Empowering Women). With women being placed into a set category and role, this causes men to see them as weak and unable to work full-time. This barrier could be broken by a more forward way of thinking towards womenââ¬â¢s roles in society. There are plenty of women who do not fit the role of housewife, and by placing them into this role, they are being unrightfully judged. With a more forward way of thinking , this issue of set role can be solved within the work place. Sexual harassment is another barrier which women must face in the work force that most men would not. This harassment comes as an illegal discrimination in many different forms that is intended to make women feel uncomfortable and not welcome (Conley 313). The act of harassment can make women feel very unequal and strange in the workplace, discouraging them from climbing up the corporate ladder. Men do this to subordinate the women in the society, giving them more power, and in most cases they are successful in doing so. In fact, 90 percent of large corporations reported sexual harassment complaints by women employees (Empowering Women). If sexual harassment were more discouraged in the work place, women would feel more confident in climbing up the social ladder without the constant fear of sexual ridicule. With the banning of sexual harassment, the work place would be a safer and more equal environment to work in. American society today still sadly portrays unequal opportunity between genders. Due to the corporate glass ceiling, women being seen as housewives, and sexual harassment in the work place, this inequality will continue to occur for women. These barriers are preventing women from climbing the corporate ladder, which blocks equality in the workforce. If my suggestion to destroy all of these barriers were to go through, American society today would have equal opportunity for both genders in the corporateà world. With equal opportunity, there will be more productivity and greater overall acceptance in the work place. Poverty throughout the United States Essays
Poverty throughout the United States Essays Poverty throughout the United States Essay Poverty throughout the United States Essay The culture of poverty thesis maintains that the poor are largely responsible for their own poverty. Others, however, argue that this attitude essentially blames the victim and that poverty is cause by societyââ¬â¢s unequal distribution of wealth. This paper takes the stand that poverty is condition brought about by the unequal opportunities and distribution of wealth. There are many measures employed in the United States to prevent, alleviate or cure poverty and to maintain adequate incomes for certain sectors of the population. Being one of the superpower in the world, it is difficult to imagine that extreme poverty still exists in this country. For indeed, how can a nation so wealthy still have citizens who are less fortunate. There comes a time when world do get a glimpse of the real condition of poverty as a fact of life in the United States. Defining Poverty Poverty may be defined in absolute or relative terms. An absolute definition defines a minimal level of well-being in nutrition, shelter, clothing, health and many more and then determines what income is sufficient to maintain this level, taking into account family size and other factors. To start off, one sees that for the huge majority of Americans, the days of high quality jobs with decent wages, security, and full health and retirement benefits are a thing of the past. This is especially true of people who had little or no education and are therefore barred from great companies. As for cashing in on the success of companies like Microsoft, or becoming a venture capitalist, to make money more quickly, as James Fallows in The Invisible Poor notes many Americans to have done, even the smallest business entails ample capital, not to mention financial risk, which people like Tanya could not afford to take. Hence the solution is more suitable for middle class people with money to spare (Fallows). Given that the situation is characterized by the need for jobs with a salary that would cover, at the very least, the basic needs of a family, it seems plausible that the best solution is to promote economic growth. According to Charles Clark in Ending Poverty in America: The First Step, the rationale for ââ¬Å"making the economic pie largerâ⬠is so all can have more, that is, to minimize scarcity (not enough to go around) that results in income inequality and poverty. This solution not only prevents a class warfare, but also benefits the business sector, eventually leading to a ââ¬Å"trickle down effectâ⬠that benefits the workers. Clark made this solution more specific by advocating what he called a ââ¬Å"basic salary system,â⬠that would provide a decent minimum income floor to ensure ââ¬Å"economic security for the poor so they can seek further education (and to concentrate on education without oppressive work requirements) and training to try different market strategies. â⬠(Clark, 2004). An article entitled Meritocracy in America which appeared in The Economist tackles a similar issue- this time focusing on educational inequalities- and shows evidence that social mobility, i. e. people climbing the income brackets, has declined since the 1970s. Among the cited studies is the one conducted by two economists at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston who found ââ¬Å"that 40% of families remained stuck in the same income bracket in the 1990s, compared with 37% of families in the 1980s and 36% in the 1970s. (Meritocracy in America, 2004). The article goes on to explain how the educational system has become increasingly stratified by social class, with ââ¬Å"three-quarters of the students at the countryââ¬â¢s top 146 colleges [coming] from the richest socio-economic fourth, compared with just 3% from the poorest fourth (the median family income at Harvard, for example, is $150,000). â⬠Elite universities further disadvantage the poor through policies like ââ¬Å"affirmative actionâ⬠and ââ¬Å"legacy preferences. The first is designed to help members of racial minorities regardless of social status, and the second is a program that makes admittance easier for children of alumni, e. g. in most Ivy League institutions, ââ¬Å"legaciesâ⬠make up between 10% and 15% of every class (Meritocracy in America, 2004). The persistence of poverty reflects a complex conjunction of factors. First demographic trends swelled the ranks of the elderly, of female-headed households, and of job-seekers. Because these groups tend to be at the low end of employability, poverty rates went up. Thus, the situation results in the poor remaining poor and the rich becoming richer than ever. People who come from poor families have even less chance of being accepted into schools that hold the key to the best jobs. In the end, their options become limited to either attending second-rate schools promising second-rate jobs, or dropping out of school altogether to get blue-collar jobs. Although the main federal program supporting poorer students, the Pell grant, largely go to poor families with incomes below $41,000, Meritocracy in America reveals that ââ¬Å"the federal government has been shifting resources from Pell grants to other forms of aid to higher education,â⬠such as student loans and federal tax breaks that benefit both the rich and the poor. The article further questions the motivation of many colleges for giving student loans, pointing out that financial aid is being increasingly used to attract the best students away from competitors rather than to help the poor as it should (Meritocracy in America, 2004). Policy Evaluation: Economic Realities and Critical Ideological Viewpoints Because of the radical differences in their perspectives on poverty and its causes, critics of various ideological stripes have different evaluations of income support programs. There is little agreement on their impacts and outcomes. Conservatives, given their belief that poverty is the fault of the poor and of misguided welfare spending generally evaluate public programs negatively. They focus on the high cost of programs, on disincentives to work, and on the advantages of private or state programs over federal policies. Conclusions The paper concludes that there are solutions available to eliminate poverty such as a establishing a basic income system and reforming the education system to allow easier access for poor children. However, the government, schools and concerned wealthy people can only do so much. Poor people cannot go on laying the blame for being poor on other people and should start to take responsibility for their own destiny. While it is true that being born into a poor family is often large enough an obstacle to financial freedom, at the same time, having children out of wedlock, taking illegal drugs, being an alcoholic are not the types of choices that pave the way to success. It is not enough to think of the poor as hapless victims of an oppressive class structure, but to analyze their active role in their own oppression. Only through an objective understanding of the reasons why poor people remain poor for the rest of their lives can these people learn how to finally break free from the shackles that bind them. Public assistance programs come in two forms, cash assistance and in-kind assistance. Cash assistance is imply, cash assistance and in-kind assistance. Cash assistance is simply a -transfer of income from a government agency to an individual. The United States has been consistently last in establishing welfare aid income support programs, and its funding of them remains at a level well below that of most other developed nations, in which social insurance and public assistance benefits come close to ensuring current average living standards.
